The list from the government ranking the top hospitals nationwide was released, and it was not kind to the Bay area. They used a five star system and the highest rated hospital near us was Sarasota Memorial with five stars. Locally, four stars went to Mease Countryside, Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel and Mease Dunedin. The surprise was Tampa General Hospital receiving only two stars. Yesterday’s active shooter training class was a big success for the St Pete Police Department. They worked with St Pete Fire and Rescue to help train the more than 300 people who came out for the session at the Coliseum in St Pete. St Pete PD said they will offer the seminar to other groups and organizations throughout the year.
They’re still cleaning up after that big brush fire burned over 80 acres on Egmont Key this week. The island was still closed, and you can check here to see when it might reopen. That fire was most likely started by a lightning strike.
Florida Fish and Wildlife would like to find the person responsible for painting the shells of gopher tortoises and put a stop to it. It’s not only against the law, it’s dangerous for the tortoises. They ask if you see anyone doing it to report it immediately. Connect to the FWC here.
There was no winner in Powerball last night on Wed. Saturday’s drawing will now have an estimated jackpot of $478 million.

The deadline to register to vote in Florida’s August 30th primary is this Monday, August 1st. You can do that online but just make sure you do it on time.
