Gasparilla Cleanup; HCC President Charged With DUI

keep-tampaAnother Gasparilla has come and gone, but a lot of garbage was left behind. Even with Sunday’s wet and chilly weather more than 300 volunteers showed up to clean up. Last year that totaled more than 3,200 pounds of trash. Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful says they’ll have this year’s total later this week.

Kenneth Atwater, the President of Hillsborough Community College was arrested and charged with driving under the influence Saturday night near Dale Mabry Highway. He refused a breathalyzer test. He has been president of HCC for seven years.


St Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman talked about the failing Tangerine Plaza at his second annual Urban Affairs update Sunday at Fairmount Park Elementary School in Childs Park. Kriseman and other city officials also spent time talking with residents from the South St. Petersburg Community Redevelopment Area.


manateeThe news wasn’t good for the Manatee population in Florida last. 520 died, 104of them from collisions with boats. This was not the worst year however – that was 2013 when 830 died.


Governor Scott has approved $15.8 million for emergency beach and restoration projects for areas hit by Hurricane Mathew this past October. St. Johns, Flagler, Volusia and Brevard counties will split the funds. In Flagler County alone it could cost some $38 million to restore the dunes according to Flagler County Administrator Craig Coffey.


A Cuban delegation will be in Tampa this Wednesday and Thursday to talk more trade between Cuba and Florida. Governor Scott is already on record warning ports in Florida not to do business with what he called a Cuban dictatorship. There is no formal agreement yet between the Port of Tampa and Cuba.
deltaOnce again Delta flights were grounded over the weekend. This time is was what the airline called “automation issues.” This morning their web site says those issues have been resolved and the ground stop has been lifted. You may experience some delays as a result of the backup.

Former Tampa Bay Buc John Lynch is now the General Manager of the San Francisco 49’ers. ESPN says the former Bucs safety has a six-year contract, and is a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the third straight year. This year’s class will be elected Saturday at Super Bowl 51 in Houston.


And who will play in Houston Sunday? That’s the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons. If New England wins it would be their 5th win overall, and the second in the last three years.
