Latest Stats Show Crime Down In Tampa

At last check more than 5,000 flights have been canceled and more than one thousand delayed thanks to the storm hitting the upper Midwest and Northeast coast. That includes flights out off Tampa International Airport, St Petersburg, Lakeland, Orlando and Sarasota. Blizzard warnings are out from Pennsylvania to Maine. That storm can affect up to 60 million people, and with the strong winds they expect thousands to be without power. Amtrak has also canceled service is some of the affected areas. Is Tampa becoming a safer place to live? Crime statistics released by the city of Tampa on Tuesday show a 24% decrease in crime since 2011. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Chief of Police Eric Ward credit residents with helping to lower the crime stats, calling it a team effort.

Hillsborough Sheriff’s deputies found both Alisa Summers and her husband who they say kidnapped Alisa yesterday. They were found at the Little Harbor Inn in Ruskin. Trevor Summers had what they believe was a self-inflicted knife wound to this throat but should be released from the hospital to the Sheriff’s custody later today. Alisa had minor injuries.

A story from the Associated Press alleges that Governor Scott and other top Republicans spent more than $237 million dollars on private lawyers. A great deal of the work they handled for the state was for the ongoing dispute over water rights with the state of Georgia.

It appears Enterprise Florida is no more. The House voted to eliminate the agency and also downsize Visit Florida. They also voted to place restrictions on Visit Florida.

The NCAA tournament field is set, and there are four teams from Florida. They are University of Florida, Florida State, University of Miami and Florida Gulf Coast University. The Gators, Seminoles and Florida Gulf Coast will all have first round games in Orlando. Miami’s first game is Friday in Oklahoma.
