A brush fire that grew quickly thanks to windy, dry conditions shut down JB Starkey Wilderness Park for some time yesterday. The fire began around SR 54 and Gunn Highway and at one point the Florida National Guard brought in a Blackhawk helicopter for water drops. That fire is almost completely contained, but don’t be surprised by smoky conditions in the area for a few days. The park should be back open today.

The first cruise from the Port of Tampa to Cuba set sail last night. The seven night cruise on board Royal Caribbean’s ship, Empress of the Seas will also make stops in Cozumel, Belize and Havana, Cuba. The next trip will be at the end of the month.

The Bucs had the 19th overall pick in the NFL draft and picked up University of Alabama tight end O.J. Howard. Howard played at Raymond James Stadium in an NCAA Championship game earlier this year.

The Cross Bay Ferry rides are over for now. Yesterday was the last day for the six-month pilot program. Now officials will take a look at the total ridership and money brought in and make a decision on whether or not to continue the program.
