As of last night’s report the wildfire in Starkey Park was about 70% contained, affecting over 2,275 acres. You’ll see smoke in the area and all camping in the area has been cancelled. The Salvation Army is helping firefighters and could use donations of item like Gatorade/Powerade, sunblock, Chapstick, bug spray, non-perishable individually wrapped packaged snacks. You can drop those off at the warehouse at 7745 Ridge Road. Burn bans remain in place for most Bay area counties.

It was a close call for one resident of Starkey Park. Pasco County Sheriff’s deputies found a young hawk they think lost its nest to the fire. Tampa Bay Raptor Rescue is caring for the bird for now, then it will be taken to Audubon Maitland for rehab and release.

The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority approved the next step in expansion plans for Tampa International Airport. That amendment to the 2017 fiscal budget is for $132.4 million dollars. The red parking garage would be demolished and construction would begin on the retail and office space.

Duke Energy is asking for a rate increase to help pay for the $82 million in costs they incurred with the cancelation of the Levy County nuclear power plant. If it is approved look for $2.51 increase in bills starting in January of 2018.’

Sea turtle nesting season is underway, so watch for nests on the beach, and make sure to dim those lights at night if you live at the beach. Hatchlings could head the wrong way if you don’t. There’s also quite a few volunteers checking nests daily.
