Tropical Storm Emily made landfall on Anna Maria Island yesterday bringing some eight inches of rain to parts of the Bay area along with gusty winds that had the Sunshine Skyway Bridge closed for some time. The Coast Guard also had to rescue two men that went out during the storm when their boat sank in the heavy rains and winds. Governor Scott did declare a state of emergency for 31 counties in the state. We have more on storm preparation and cleanup in the Dove Hurricane Guide.

St Petersburg’s Public Works system said that yesterday’s heavy rains from Emily did not overwhelm they system. They did say there were a few minor issues.

Pasco County Commissioners awarded a contract so that cleanup on the sinkhole can finally get underway. Ceres Environmental Services bid $640,000 for the project. For now the county’s insurance fund will be picking up the $1.3 million dollar price tag for the initial phase of the cleanup.

The back-to-school sales tax holiday is coming up this weekend. Computers are be back on the list. They were not last year. The holiday begins at midnight on Friday, August 4th and ends midnight on Sunday, August 6th.
