Some school districts will give students time off on Monday to view the solar eclipse. Hillsborough and Pasco students can skip the whole day or parents will be allowed to pick them up for a half day. Students will need a note for the day off in Pinellas. The full story is in the Tampa Bay Times.
The heat is on for students in Hillsborough County students who don’t have AC to cool off. Citrus Park Elementary parents reported the issues last week and more complaints have come in from parents with students in Walker, Martinez and Davidsen Middle Schools. Schools are blaming old system for the problems.
The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority is looking for up to 1,600 volunteers to be a part of the Connected Vehicle Pilot Program set to kick off in May of 2018. An antenna and new rear view mirror will be attached to volunteer’s cars that can “talk” to other cars and traffic signals. The goal is a safer ride and if you do volunteer you’ll get a 30% discount on elevated lane tolls. Click here for more on the story.
Someone tried to kidnap a 16 year old girl walking on Himes, near Flora Avenue last week on the first day back in school. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office describes the suspect as a Hispanic male in his mid-30’s with a medium build. He was wearing a long sleeve white shirt with paint stains, khaki pants and a tan baseball hat. If you know anything call the sheriff’s office at 813-247-8200. Seven members of the Florida Gators have been suspended for the season opener against Michigan. That group includes quarterback Antonio Calloway. They were suspended for allegedly misusing school funds. The school has not issued formal statement on why they were suspended.
The Mote Marine Aquarium will hold a memorial for Snooty the Manatee next month. Snooty died when became trapped in equipment in the aquarium. The memorial will be held Sept. 10th.
