Schools Announce Irma Make-Up Days

Pinellas and Polk county students will make up the days missed due to Hurricane Irma. In Polk they’ll stop early release to make up the time and in Pinellas the first make up day is Oct. 16th with more to be announced at the end of the month. Pasco County schools won’t cancel any planned days off but will adjust the regular school days to make up for the lost time.

 

The Amber alert for four Manatee County who may have been abducted by their mother has been canceled, and  their mother, Jaimia Gadeaun is in custody. She was visiting the kids and their grandmother last Friday and disappeared with them shortly after that. We have more on the story here.

 

The free ride is over on Florida toll roads. As of Thursday morning, tolls are once again being charged. They had been lifted after Hurricane Irma walloped Florida.

 

Hurricane Irma may be gone, but now the scammers are moving in to the state. The greatest threats seem to be with so-called contractors that want you to sign away your Assignment of Benefits. The Florida Department of Financial Services has some good advice on how to make sure you’re working with reputable contractors.

 

There’s a fraudulent text going around that claims that Duke Energy will pay your bills. It will ask for your Social Security Number and that’s a dead giveaway it’s a scam. Duke Energy says they never ask for personal information that way and to just delete it.

 

All counties in the Bay area remain eligible for disaster relief from FEMA. Pasco, Citrus and Highlands were added late yesterday after complaints were issued when the original list came out. Taking a walk this weekend? You’ll find a part of Bayshore Blvd in Tampa is closed for repairs on the seawall side for walkers between South Delaware and South Boulevard until mid-November. Watch for partial lane closures for vehicular traffic on Bayshore between South Howard and West Platt as well.
