Zika Virus Confirmed In Bay Area

The Bay area has a confirmed case of the Zika virus. A couple who had traveled to Cuba are the source, and officials believe they contracted the virus after they returned home and were bitten by a mosquito carrying the Zika virus. Health officials believe that no one else has been affected.

 

If you live near Tampa International Airport keep an eye out for Brady. She’s a dog who managed to get out of her crate while being loaded onto a Delta plane heading to Bermuda with her family who is moving there. Brady is chipped but not wearing her collar

Help for animals displaced by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico is coming from the Suncoast Animal League. They are accepting donations to help with costs, and have already had some $2,000 in donated medical supplies.

 

 

Bad news coming from the Florida citrus growers. Thanks to Hurricane Irma growers believe this year will have lowest yield in 75 years. That adds up to some $800 million dollars in lost crops. The full story is in the Tampa Bay Times.

 

The rest stops at both ends of the Sunshine Skyway are going to be renovated at a cost of $1.8 million dollars. The work should wrap up in 2018. The southbound rest stop is already closed with demo work starting next week. When that side is down, the northbound side is next and that will include work on the seawall as well.

 

If you’re still waiting for storm debris pickup you also need to know what will not be picked up. The first round of pickups that are underway are for what counties call “vegetative debris” which includes those tree limbs. The second sweep will be for damaged fencing. But residents are responsible for disposing of things like mattresses and other things from the house with storm damage. For county by county pickup rules check the list for yourself here.

 

The Bucs have signed former kicker Pat Murray who was with the Bucs in 2014 but was lost to injuries the past few years. Current kicker Nick Folk is now listed on injured reserve, so Murray will be on the field Sunday against Arizona.
