Mayor Rick Kriseman retain his seat as Mayor after defeating former Mayor Rick Baker in yesterday’s election. The Penny for Pinellas once-cent tax was also approved for another ten years. We have the rest of yesterday’s results here.
Two time Cy Young award winner and Florida resident Roy Halladay died in a plane crash yesterday off the coast of Holiday yesterday. The eight time All Star was alone in his single engine place went down shortly after noon in the Gulf. The NTSB is investigating.
Brian Dugan is no longer interim Chief of Police in Tampa. Mayor Bob Buckhorn made the title Chief of Police official yesterday. Dugan has been with TPD for 27 years.
The Suncoast Animal League returned from Puerto Rico with more than 100 dogs and a dozen
cats that were left homeless after Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the island. Many of those rescued will be up for adoption this Saturday as part of Dogtoberfest at Highlander Park in Dunedin. Ann Kelly will host the events and has all the details here.
FSU President John Thrasher issued an indefinite interim suspension of all fraternities and sororities on campus in the aftermath of the death of a pledge at a fraternity party, and the arrest of another fraternity member for selling and trafficking cocaine. There is also a ban on alcohol sales at all recognized student organization events.
Metropolitan Ministries holiday tent is open in downtown Tampa at the corner of Cass and Nebraska. The need for donations is expected to be stronger than usual thanks to our hurricanes and families coming into the area from Puerto Rico.
