Yes, that’s snow falling in Florida

Planning a trip up to northern Florida or the east coast of the US? Wait a few days. Have you ever heard of a bomb cyclone?” That’s what happening today and for the next few days as a “bombogenisis” is firing up. The full explanation is here, but it’s that pressure drop that we associate with hurricanes that’s going to cause the problems – with the force of a category three hurricane. That moves through and  behind that comes a polar vortex. Now that’s a term we’ve heard before.

But snow in Florida? Sure thing up in Tallahassee this morning. But if you have friends in northern New York, they may have a wind chill of -50 by Saturday.

So what do we need to do here to protect ourselves? Even here in Tampa Bay there’s things you don’t want to leave in the car like medications and electronics. Pets that may normally live outdoors need a warm place and it’s time protect that tender tropical plants. Happily we won’t deal with all these issues but some may apply.

With a wind chill advisory for the Bay area, a freeze warning for some and a freeze watch mainly away from the water it’s going to be a long night for a lot us. Some cold weather shelters are open in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando. Those shelters may also be in need of  donations. Right now, Hillsborough County has two shelters that take pets.

Now, if your home needs a little help with heat be aware of the dangerous of  space heaters – they need to be used carefully.

Stay safe, stay warm and I’ll see you first thing in the morning with the latest. – Ann Kelly
