School Security Discussion In Tampa Today

Governor Rick Scott will in Tampa today for a press conference at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office. He’ll talk about the proposed $500 million for an increase in school safety and mental health programs.

The US Women’s Hockey team will be at the Lightning game tonight as part of their cross-country tour after winning the gold medal. A pre-game ceremony is scheduled and you’ll be able to get autographs around Amalie Arena during the first period intermission.

Search For Panther In Hillsborough County

Someone in Valrico thought they saw a panther and that set off a search that involved helicopters and deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office. Residents on Cimarron Drive called the sheriff to report the possible sighting but none was ever spotted. The Florida Panther is a protected species and the FWC says the remaining are mainly in southwest Florida. The panther in this photo had been spotted on a front porch in Ft. Myers in 2016.

A Pasco County student was charged with bringing a weapon to school. Sheriff’s deputies found an AR-15 in his truck, after someone spotted shotgun shells in the bed of the truck. There were no threats made against the school and now that student will face a third-degree felony. Gov Scott Schedules Press Conference On Fl School Safety

Florida Governor Rick Scott has a press conference scheduled for 10:30 this morning. The Governor said he has a “major action plan”to help keep students in Florida safe. Yesterday, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said the School Resource Officer who was a deputy never went in to Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 students and teachers died. Deputy Scot Peterson has resigned. Two other officers are on administrative leave pending further investigation.

Commissioners Vote To Spend Another $61 Million For Amalie Improvements

Hillsborough County Commissioners wants to make sure the Lightning stay in Amalie Arena. They voted to spend another $61 million dollars on improvements to the venue. The total amount for improvements now rises to $108.5 million through 2030. This would keep the Lightning in place through 2037 or face financial penalties. Funding would come from the county’s bed tax collection.

JROTC Student Shooting Victims To Receive Medal of Heroism

Law enforcement and school officials all across the Bay area are talking to students and running drills on active shooter situations in reaction to the Parkland shootings. Manufacturers of bullet proof backups are seeing a rise in sales. On Tuesday officials announced three JROTC cadets that died in the shooting will be awarded the Medal of Heroism from the US Army. The Florida National Guard will also be at their funerals.

Vigils Held For Parkland School Shooting Victims

Vigils were held across the state Monday night to honor the seventeen shooting victims in Parkland, Florida. One in Tampa’s Curtis Hixon Park featured a choir singing “Hallejulah” and a readingof the victim’s names. On Monday DCF also released a 2016 report on the accused shooter Nicholas Cruz that called him “a vulnerable adult due to mental illness.

An undercover sting by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department over the weekend caught 26 unlicensed contractors. Sheriff Bob Gualteiri said “Operation Drop The Hammer” shows problems persist with Pinellas County Construction Licensing Board. He called the independent agency “ineffective”

Candlelight Vigils Tonight For Parkland Victims

Candlelight vigils will be held across the state tonight in honor of the Parkland shooting victims. The vigils will begin at 7 pm. We have a list of locations that do include Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. At least 100 students from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School, where the shootings took place, are expected in Tallahassee today.

A 14-year old boy from Pinellas Park was arrested and charged with making threats on social media Friday night. The specific threat was against the Lealman Innovation Academy in St Petersburg. The post was reported to Pinellas Park Police and he was arrested Saturday [More]
