The Pinellas County School Board approved new start times at yesterday’s meetings that will have high school students in class at 7:20 am, just a little later than this year’s 7:05 am start. A slightly later start was also approved for middle and elementary students. Those few minutes will cost the district close to a million dollars to add more bus routes and drivers. The new “No Straws St Pete” campaign kicked off yesterday with a mission to use less plastic. Advocates are hoping to lessen the effects of plastic on our environment. Some 20 businesses are already on board. St Pete follows the lead of cities like Ft Myers, and California that already has a ban in place.
The National Center for Education Statistics released what they call “the nation’s report card” and it was good news for Florida and Hillsborough County specifically. The county was at the top of the list for 27 urban school districts. You can see more on the story in the Tampa Bay Times.
The Tampa Bay Lighting take the Eastern Conference title and gain home ice advantage through the playoffs.. Tampa will start playoff action this Thursday at Amalie Arena against New Jersey, and will host a full week of special events. Tickets are on sale here.
A road rage incident in Sarasota is making national news and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s office could used help to id the car that ended up running a motorcyclist off the road. The whole incident was caught on cell phone video. If you can help you’re asked to call the SCSO.
Beer Can Island is under new ownership and the rules are changing. The island was not especially clean and the four new owners are cleaning it up, adding restrooms and free overnight camping will not be allowed. You can still visit the island off Tampa for free but to use those restrooms to camp, you’ll need an access pass that will cost $35. That’s just for the first 300 sold and after that the price goes up.
